The Primal Performance Series Plate Loaded Rotating Smith Back Row is a commercial row machine that works two ways: as a standard Smith row, or as an incline chest supported row once the seat pad is adjusted. The bullhorns take up to 320 kg of Olympic plates and the machine is rated for users up to 300 kg. It occupies 1742 × 1390 mm of floor space and is only 1090 mm high.
The guided path takes momentum out of the row, so the back does the work instead of the hips and lower back. That makes it well suited to slow, controlled eccentrics for muscle growth, and to heavy rowing without the fatigue of holding a hinged position.
Who it is for
- Commercial gyms that want a heavy, plate loaded back machine on the strength floor
- PT studios coaching rows for clients who struggle to hold a bent over position
- Bodybuilding and hypertrophy focused gyms where controlled back volume matters
- Strength and conditioning facilities adding a supported pull to their program
Key features
- Two row options in one machine: traditional Smith row, or incline chest supported row with the seat pad adjusted
- Guided motion path that limits momentum and keeps tension on the back, especially the lats
- Bullhorns load up to 320 kg of Olympic plates
- 300 kg maximum user weight
- 3 mm laser cut steel frame with a matte black powder coated finish
- Urethane injection moulded back pads with double stitched covers
- Low 1090 mm profile keeps sight lines open across the gym floor
Muscles worked and training uses
Rowing is the horizontal pull that balances all the pressing most members do. The chest supported option removes the lower back from the equation so users can push the back muscles harder.
- Primary: latissimus dorsi, rhomboids and middle trapezius
- Secondary: rear deltoids, biceps and forearms
- Slow eccentric rows for hypertrophy, using the guided path to control every rep
- Heavy back work for lifters whose lower back limits barbell rows
- Switching between standing and chest supported set ups to vary the stimulus across a training block

Frequently asked questions
What footprint does the Rotating Smith Back Row need?
It measures 1742 mm long, 1390 mm wide and 1090 mm high. Allow about 600 mm around it for loading plates and getting in position, which gives a working zone of roughly 2.9 × 2.6 m.
How is it loaded and how much weight does it take?
It is plate loaded: 50 mm Olympic plates go on the bullhorns, up to 320 kg in total. Plates are not included.
Will it fit in a room with a low ceiling?
Yes. The machine is only 1090 mm tall and the row pulls towards the body rather than overhead, so ceiling height is not a concern in any normal gym or garage.
What is the difference between the Smith row and incline row modes?
In Smith row mode the user stands and rows along the guided path, much like a supported barbell row. Adjusting the seat pad turns it into an incline row with chest support, which takes the lower back out of the movement.
What warranty applies?
Primal Strength covers it for full commercial use: 5 years on the frame, 3 years on parts, and 1 year on pads and wearables, plus 1 year labour.
Can you deliver and install it in Australia?
Yes. We ship Australia-wide from our Melbourne warehouse, and most metro deliveries arrive 1 to 7 business days after dispatch. It weighs 265 kg packed, so some regional addresses need a freight quote. Use the Ask about this machine form on this page for a delivery and installation quote.
